Permissions
Permissions are used to fine tune aspects of your forum by granting or restricting access to content or use of a feature. Applying a permission setting is the same process regardless of where the permission is used.
Note
The Admin is not affected by permissions.
Permission Settings
There are four permission settings. Each setting has the option to further define the permission with the use of Groups and/or Ranks.
Everyone (Default)
Includes all users, both members and guests.
Has the option of excluding designated groups.Members
Only registered members of the forum. No guests.
Has the option of excluding designated groups.Staff
Only registered members that belong to a staff designated group.
Has the option of both including and/or excluding designated groups. Groups added with this option do not need to be designated as staff.Custom
With no other option defined, excludes all users (guests and members).
Has the option of both including and/or excluding designated groups. Has the option of setting a minimum rank.
Where Permissions are Used
- Attachments - Who can post attachments
- Boards - Who can access and participate on a board
- Board Labels - Who can view and apply labels
- Categories - Who can see a category exists and access its content
- Custom Pages - Who can view a custom page
- Custom Profile Fields - Who can edit field content
- Navigation - Who can view a link on the navigation sidebar
- Plugins - Who can view (use or is affected by) a plugin
- Themes - Who can view (use) a theme
Permission Exceptions
There are some areas where the permissions work slightly different.
Attachments
Attachments do not have an Everyone
permission option as guests are not allowed to upload attachments.
Categories
Categories allow you to set a permission for access that will override the permissions of any board under that category that has less restrictive permissions. Whatever permission is set affects the users ability to both see and access the category and its boards. For example: if a category has the Access permission set to staff, then only staff will be able to view and access the category and its boards. The category and its boards will not be visible or accessible for non-staff members, regardless of the permissions defined for the boards in that category.
Custom Profile Fields
The custom profile fields offer only two permission options - Members and Staff with Power
or Staff with Power
- that determine who is allowed to edit the content of the custom field.
FYI
The "Members" of Members and Staff with Power
refers to a member's ability to edit the content of a custom field in their own profile only.
Navigation
The following navigation links have built-in restrictions regarding what permissions can be set:
- Admin - The permission for this link is preset and cannot be changed. The admin panel link is only available for the Admin and any member who has admin panel access via a group power.
- Note: Members who have admin panel access via a group are restricted to the areas corresponding to the power(s) assigned the group.
- Bookmarks - This link does not offer the
Everyone
permission because only registered members can bookmark threads. - Members - This link does not offer the
Everyone
permission because only registered members can view the members list.
